What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)? A Plain-English Guide

AI engines answer your buyers before they ever reach your site. GEO is the work that decides whether you're in the answer. Here's the whole practice in plain English, with the first month mapped out.

Generative engine optimization, defined

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of getting a business recommended inside AI-generated answers. It covers the entity data, third-party citations, structured markup, and page structure that AI engines pull from when they write a response. The goal is to be the source an engine cites, not just a link on a results page.

That's the whole idea. The rest of this guide covers how GEO differs from SEO, why it matters now, what actually moves an AI answer, how to measure it, and what to do in your first month.

How GEO differs from SEO

SEO and GEO share a foundation, then split. Both need clean technical hygiene, real topic coverage, and a site an engine can crawl. After that the win conditions are different.

  • SEO competes for a position. GEO competes to be quoted. A ranking is a slot on a page. A citation is a sentence inside the answer.
  • SEO's unit of work is the page. GEO's unit of work is the claim. Engines lift passages, so one paragraph can get cited while the rest of the page gets ignored.
  • SEO measures impressions, clicks, and position. GEO measures whether you appear at all, how you get described, and who gets named next to you.
  • SEO fixes usually live on your own site. Much of GEO lives off it, in the directories, publications, and review sites engines already trust.
  • SEO results arrive in a console you own. GEO results only arrive if you go ask the engines yourself, on a schedule.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No, and anybody selling it that way is selling you a rebrand. An engine that can't crawl you can't cite you, so the technical and entity work underneath SEO is the entry fee for both. GEO is the layer on top: the same foundations, pointed at a system that reads and summarizes instead of listing links.

In practice the two share about half a work plan. Site health, schema, topic coverage, and internal linking serve both. Citation building, entity consistency across third-party sources, passage-level writing, and per-engine measurement are the GEO-specific half.

Why GEO matters now

AI engines answer buyers before those buyers ever reach a site. Somebody asks which company to hire, and the engine names three. If you're not one of the three, you never learn the conversation happened.

That absence is the genuinely new problem. A lost ranking shows up in your analytics. A lost recommendation doesn't. No referrer, no session, no query row, nothing to diagnose. The demand just goes to whoever the engine trusted.

Buyers also arrive further along. Someone who has already read a synthesized comparison of four vendors isn't browsing, they're checking. That changes what your site has to do when they land: less education, more proof, and one obvious next step.

And the field is early. Most companies have never audited how consistently they get described, have no citation strategy, and have never once measured what an engine says about them. Being early is the advantage, and it has a shelf life.

What actually influences an AI answer

Four things do most of the work, and none of them are tricks.

Entity clarity

An engine has to be certain who you are before it will vouch for you. That means one canonical name, one address format, one description of what you do, repeated everywhere you appear: your site, your schema, your profiles, your listings.

Contradictions are the real problem. A business described three different ways in three places reads as three weak entities instead of one strong one. Most of the fastest GEO wins are just cleanup.

Citations in sources the engine trusts

Engines assemble answers from sources they already rate, and your own site rarely carries an answer alone. When a trade publication, an industry directory, a comparison site, or a well-read forum thread describes you accurately, that description does more work than another post on your blog.

The practical version is unglamorous: get listed correctly, get quoted accurately, and fix the places that currently describe you wrong.

Structured data

Schema markup tells a machine what a page means instead of making it infer. Organization, Service, Article, FAQPage, LocalBusiness, and Product markup all cut the guesswork. It isn't a cheat code and it won't rescue thin content. What it removes is ambiguity, which is exactly what a retrieval system penalizes you for.

Retrieval-ready content

Engines lift passages, so write passages that survive being lifted. Put a direct answer near the top, in complete sentences that make sense with zero surrounding context. Then keep going:

  • Answer the question in the first two or three sentences, before any setup.
  • Write headings that read like the questions people actually ask.
  • Keep each claim in its own sentence, so a quote can carry one idea cleanly.
  • Put the specifics in text, not in an image or a chart an engine cannot read.
  • Say the category name out loud. A page about GEO that never writes "generative engine optimization" is hard to match to the question.
  • Keep the page current, and say when you last updated it.

How to measure GEO

You can't read GEO out of your analytics, so you have to go ask. The method is simple, and it has to stay boring to be useful: a fixed set of buying questions, asked of the same engines, on the same schedule, scored the same way every time.

We measure that by putting a fixed set of your buying questions to an AI assistant and recording what comes back: whether you appear, how you get described, and which competitors appear beside you. The trend is the product. One run on its own tells you almost nothing, because these systems vary run to run.

Then connect it to something with a P&L attached. Watch branded search volume, direct traffic, and what new prospects say when they arrive. If someone opens a call with a vendor comparison you never gave them, an engine gave it to them.

  • A fixed prompt list, written once, changed rarely.
  • The same engines every month, asked in a clean session.
  • Presence, description accuracy, and competitor set, logged per question.
  • A baseline captured before any work ships, so later movement is provable.

What to do first

If you do nothing else, do these six things in this order.

  • Baseline it. Ask twenty real buying questions and write down what comes back, including who gets named instead of you. It takes an afternoon and it changes the conversation.
  • Fix your entity. One name, one description, one address format, everywhere. Correct the listings and profiles that disagree.
  • Ship the answer. Take your five most commercial pages and put a direct, self-contained answer in the first paragraph of each.
  • Mark it up. Organization and Service schema sitewide, FAQPage anywhere you already show visible questions and answers.
  • Go get cited. Pick three sources your buyers actually read, and earn an accurate mention in each.
  • Re-score at 90 days. Same questions, same engines, same scoring, so the second number means something.

What this looks like on a real system

One example from our own work. A national restaurant group runs this across 40-plus locations, and the share of answers naming it rose 11 points in the first 90 days. The work was the list above: location-level entity data, citations built market by market, and content written to be quoted.

The score is a means, not the point. It matters because the answers it measures are where a growing share of buying decisions now start.
